STEPS IN A NEW JOURNEY

Stewardship
Since we are currently in the midst of our annual pledge drive, the Management Team feels it is appropriate to discuss how our transition will be reflected in the financial position of Ascension. The Finance/Stewardship Team prepared the following to address some of those questions.
How is Ascension doing financially so far?
After the Electing Convention, when we knew we would be losing our rector, the Finance Committee revised the budget for the remainder of 2008 to reflect the changes anticipated by the transition. This revised budget reflects excess income which, if met, would provide some funding for the Search/Transition process. Remember – we need to remain financially healthy in order to attract the best possible candidates for our next rector. It is important that everyone continue their giving during this time of transition.
How will the budget for Ascension be different next year?
It will probably be very similar to other recent years. We still have the fixed costs of running our ministries and programs, and keeping up our building and grounds. We will save money from the salary of a full time rector; however, it is likely that we will need an interim leader which may cost as much as we will save. In addition, there will be costs associated with the search process.
How much will a search process cost?
This number is hard to know in advance, and we are consulting with other churches that have had this experience recently to learn more. There are some basic categories:
Ø Search team meeting expenses;
Ø Parish meeting expenses to establish our profile;
Ø Communication expenses, such as telephone, printing, website, etc;
Ø Costs for participation of Church Deployment Officer and others for search guidance;
Ø Travel costs for team members to visit final candidates;
Ø Travel costs for final candidates to visit Ascension; and
Ø Moving costs to relocate new rector and family.
Transition expenses, both for the interim and the search process, are considered extraordinary items and are often handled like a capital campaign. Your Finance/Stewardship Team will be working on some unique, entertaining, and very Ascension-like ways to raise the additional funds needed to pay these expenses. We want to be sure that the funds are available to do the job right.
What about the economy?
We have all been affected by the reports of the recent activity in the stock market. But let us remember how blessed we are to be living in the United States. At our recent Stewardship Note-writing evening, The Ven. Janet King reminded us that if you eat three meals a day and have more than one pair of shoes, you are richer than most people in the world! Janet also reminded us that giving from gratitude is a Holy habit; that sacrificial giving means giving, not until it hurts, but until it feels good!
With all this in mind, the Journey is Still better together!

The Search Team
The Vestry is asking each parish member to prayerfully consider whether you could serve your parish as a member of the Search Team.
Why is the Search Team important?
- because it is the group which has the primary responsibility in selecting the best possible candidates, and, with God’s help, it makes the decision of who to call as our next priest.
- because it represents our parish in its diverse nature: young and old; long-time members and newcomers; married members and singles; members with children, no children, or grandchildren; men and women; cradle Episcopalians and those with other faith backgrounds.
What does the Search Team do?
- Prayerfully meets regularly as a team.
- Gathers information about Ascension through small group discussions and questionnaires: our strengths and weaknesses, our vision for the future
- Creates our parish profile: a description of Ascension, our ministries, the town of Twin Falls
- Creates a weighted “wish list” for a new priest: what qualities are we looking for in our next priest?
- Assures that the Ascension website is up to date and promotional materials prepared to give information to any priest researching the parish.
- Studies the resumes of all candidates who express interest in the position and chooses finalists who will be the best fit for our parish.
- Visits finalist priests in their home parishes
- Determines which final candidate(s) will be brought to Ascension to meet parishioners, Vestry and staff.
Should I consider being on the team?
You are encouraged to apply if you:
· Have an open heart and open mind
· Enjoy collaborating with others
· Are a good listener
· Seek God’s guidance in your daily life
· Support the parish through worship, stewardship and participation in activities
· Feel you could make a commitment of at least one year to the process
· Have time in your schedule for meetings, research and travel
· Understand the need for confidentiality in the process
· Care passionately about the future of the Church of the Ascension
Application forms for the Search Team are available in the Narthex. Please return them to the Church Office no later than Sunday, October 12th.

NEW OFFICE HOURS ANNOUNCED September 4, 2008 Do you remember the last time you tried to complete a task and the phone rang 10 times? Welcome to the world of our parish administrator, Paula Gooding! Ascension is blessed to have a very loving and approachable person sitting in our front office. She is an important part of Ascension’s hospitality and our everyday operations. Now that Fr. Brian no longer sits in the office next door, Paula’s importance and workload has increased. In an effort to give her a small amount of uninterrupted time to help accomplish all that she does for us, beginning on Tuesday, September 2 the church office will be open 9:30am—12:30pm Monday - Friday. Yes, Paula will still be in the office at 8:30am each morning and you will be able to get into the building but she will not answer the phone or be available for visitors until 9:30am. With this next step in our journey, each of us will find new ways to help “just a little”. In addition to giving Paula an extra “thank you” next time you see her, this is one more way we can respect her efforts to do the very best job for all of us. Linda Trower-Shuss, Junior Warden P.S. There is rumor that Paula is fond of Peanut M &Ms , if you need help with a large project maybe bribery isn’t always such a bad thing! Transition Time, who do you call? CALL THE OFFICE FIRST! - 733-1248 ************************************************* Management Team & Communication Our journey has begun. We have celebrated with Fr. Brian and sent him off on his own path. We are responding to his departure with sadness, with memories, with gratitude and with excitement for the adventure ahead. Now we enter the transition period where we continue our ministries, open our hearts and minds to changes in our Ascension routine, and move toward calling a new spiritual leader How will Ascension keep functioning day to day? Life at Ascension will go on as usual – Sunday school, Bible Study, worship services, outreach, fellowship ….. all that we do together as the body of Christ. A Management Team is in place to assure continuity in regular worship and office activities, to figure out ways of doing things with lay leadership and supply clergy, to maintain communication within the parish and to answer any questions and concerns which arise. The Vestry will continue to oversee the activities of ministry teams and finances of the parish. This is a time for every member at Ascension to take our own steps: be flexible; be accommodating and patient; ask questions and make suggestions to the Management Team; continue to support Ascension financially; and volunteer to help in the activities of the church. (…and, of course, turn off lights and lock doors when you leave the building!) Grab someone’s hand…. We know we journey well together! How will we know what’s happening, day to day and in the Search Process? Communication will take many forms: with excitement for what’s around the bend in the road, Cindy Jardine, Management Team Coordinator ************************************************* Sharing A New Journey---Step 1 July 23,2008 What now? Brian Thom is the Bishop-Elect of Idaho and a new journey is beginning for the Church of Ascension. A journey of goodbyes and hellos, of learning and growing, of reflecting and defining, of hoping and dreaming, and of so many other adventures that are unknown to us at this moment. How do we start this new journey? We start in the same way that any journey is started. We start by taking a first step. What is our first step? The first step is a fun one. Celebrate! How many blessings has Ascension received over the past last 17 years? Can we count them all? Let’s try. All things of the spirit begin with gratitude and so that is where we begin this new journey—at a place of gratitude and celebration. Fr. Brian’s last office day will be August 6th and his last Sunday with us is August 17. On that day we will celebrate with one worship service at 9:00a.m. Later that day, we will send Brian to the Diocese of Idaho with an Ascension-style celebration (translation: fun, fun, fun!). Judi Baxter will be our party-planner extraordinaire and we will give you more details as they become available. Want to help? Contact Judi at judibaxter@yahoo.com. The most important step of any journey is the first one. Each step in our journey will bring us new blessings, joys and great opportunities to share our “time, treasure, and talents”. Let us be thoughtful and prayerful each step of the way. If we try to rush ahead we risk missing the joys each step has to offer. So in gratitude, love and joy-----here we go!
